Soon after TK Hardware & Electrical Supply, owned by Gregorio & Rosa Tan, was burned along Avenida Ave., Sta. Cruz, Manila in April 1985, their son, Robert Kimgiok Tan, together with his wife Helen Sy Tan established a new store under the name, TKL HARDWARE & CONSTRUCTION SUPPLY. TKL - "TK" in memory of the original store of his father and "L" for Laurence, as their first born child.
At first, keeping up the business while competing with similar businesses in the surrounding vicinity had not been easy for them. Robert, referred to as "Boss", was in charge of purchasing, sales and marketing, truck dispatching and Warehouse Checking while Helen, fondly called as "Misis" was the all-around "tindera", "kahera" and Checker reliever.
Through God's grace and noble intentions, the couple's demonstration of admirable diligence, dedication, and integrity in keeping their business paved way for its success. Their original stand-alone store continued to grow and they were able to acquire additional warehouses. In 1993, TKL focused on steel products due to the company's growing client's demand on steel products.
From their original one jeepney type service vehicle, they were able to acquire more than twenty (20) delivery trucks to enable an on-time delivery of products to the increasing demand from hardware stores, prominent construction contractors and other known steel suppliers in Metro Manila and neighborhood provinces.
Initially with eight employees, the company has more than two hundred employees of high spirits at present and acknowledged as a corporation in 1997 and duly registered as such with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
